A heart donated from a brain-dead youth was brought to Chennai in 90 minutes from Vellore and successfully transplanted into a woman suffering from heart failure.
In this regard, a press release issued by MGM Healthcare Hospital, Chennai:
A 20-year-old youth, who was seriously injured in a road accident, was admitted to the CMC hospital in Vellore and was left brain dead. Subsequently, the young man's heart was donated. Following this, the medical team led by KR Balakrishnan, MGM Hospital's heart-lung transplant expert, went to Vellore on Friday morning and took the young man's heart safely and left for Chennai at 11.07 am.
The heart was brought to the MGM Hospital at Nitakarai via Kanchipuram, Sunguarschatram, Sriperumbudur, Maduravail, Koyambedu at 12.35 pm. A 34-year-old woman who was admitted there with heart failure was successfully transplanted by a team led by Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan.It has been reported that the traffic police has provided an unhindered corridor (green corridor) facility so that there is no disruption in the road traffic.
